Bringing Literacy to Kids
The UN Rotaract Club has partnered with the Rotary Foundation to create an effective literacy program this summer through the Books for Kids Foundation for the children of the Early Life Program at Lutheran Social Services. Rotaractors will conduct a book drive to help grow the library’s book collection and the Foundation will assist by purchasing needed materials and additional books to implement an effective literacy program.         more info & photos inside.

Rotaract and Rotary Foundation funding will go towards library collection replenishment, classroom replenishments, parent/family event supplies and Incentives, and designating a library specialist who will implement the program and engage the children in a weekly dynamic and interactive Story Time.

The mission of the Books for Kids Foundation is to promote literacy among all children with a special emphasis on low-income and at-risk preschool-aged children. Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and implements literacy programs to develop the critical early foundation and skills which young children need to be successful in life.

Books are the first step in helping children gain the skills they need to be ready for school, and for life. Through Book for Kids libraries, the children have access to books and a print-rich environment. However, the real magic happens during programming; from puppet shows and sing-alongs to literacy-based arts & crafts, and group readings, all these activities bring books to life. Through these programs, the goal is to build key literacy skills in children: phonological awareness, alphabetic knowledge, and understanding the concepts about print conventions. These are all necessary skills for children to achieve so that they can be ready for kindergarten. BFK make learning fun and help build the critical early literacy skills children need to be successful in life.
