RCNY International Breakfast at the UN
Report by Andreas Runggatscher

RCNY's December 18th International Breakfast Meeting featured speaker Rose Sager, Trade Representative for the Kingdom of Bahrain. She spoke on the cultural history & current business climate of Bahrain, highlighting the Free-Trade Agreement between the United State and Bahrain implemented in 2006.

She reflected on some of the cultural contexts in which Bahrain is actually one of the most open, modern, and free countries in the Gulf especially reflected in their treatment of women. For example, they've had compulsory education for both genders that began in the early 1900s, and women are able to drive, dress as they wish, and hold any professional position both in the private & governmental sector. Moreover, they also boast significant religious tolerance and the peaceful coexistence of many of the major world religions. Of their 1.3 million inhabitants, nearly 50% are ex-pats.

Meanwhile, she emphasized how Bahrain encourages foreign investment by not requiring a minimum investment nor local partners for foreigners wishing to start a company in their country. Additionally, doing so would allow them to be a part of the Gulf Cooperation Council. In fact, they offer government-sponsored support for these companies in the form of the Bahrain Investor Center, in which their motto is "Red Carpet not Red Tape. While they have diverse industries, they have most notably been expanding in the industry of FinTech, with partnerships with Silicon Valley & Singapore.

She ended her presentation with an invitation to those in attendance to visit Bahrain themselves, as it's also a great tourist destination and offered more information on a planned tour done by the US-Bahrain Friendship Society.
