About Amiri Anderson

Amiri Anderson is a resilient young woman from Manhattan. She entered the foster care system at about age 9 due to domestic violence, and entered the system again at age 15 after being abused by her parents. Despite challenges faced in her foster homes and/or college, such as starvation, theft, lack of medical care, lack of academic support, etc. she managed to graduate university with a degree in Business Administration. Only 3% of foster kids graduate from college. She has studied Mandarin, Chinese at Middlebury College, was a teachers assistant for calculus 1 and for an information technology management class at the University at Albany, SUNY.

She has also lobbied for more funding for the educational opportunities program (EOP) at Ualbany, and has lobbied for more funding for foster care students. In fact, she was the founder and President of a club on campus dedicated to helping students in foster care, and even created a Foster Care Students Bill of Rights for all professors and administration to follow at Ualbany.

During her college journey, she has also published a memoir highlighting her journey through abuse in the foster care system, abuse that she sometimes endured by caseworkers, and others who are supposed to protect her.

Although Amiri is unsure of her ideal career, she would like to work in Marketing, which was her concentration in college, or even at banks, Google, or Facebook. Amiri Malloy Anderson is an example of how one can turn lemons into lemonade.
