This week’s virtual luncheon of the Rotary Club of New York in 2020 took place on Zoom on April 16, 2020. The meeting served as a platform for different Rotary clubs around the world to discuss how they are addressing the COVID-19 crisis in their regions.
Erik Cempel, President Elect of the Rotary Club of Chicago, spoke about how the Chicago Club is taking a hands-on approach to address COVID-19 by aiding healthcare workers and first responders with meals. The Club is donating funds to homeless shelters and has instituted a phone tree to check on all their members.
Dr. Roberto Cosentini and Dr. Renato Vico from the Rotary Club of Bergamo spoke about how the curve has been “flattening” in Italy with cases and fatalities on the decline. The Club has been highlighting the efforts of first responders through online videos and murals with celebrity engagement.
Giorgi Rustavi from the Rotary in the Republic of Georgia spoke about how the COVID-19 situation is still developing in the Republic of Georgia. While there are 350 cases in Georgia, there is an effort on the government to maintain safety in a religious celebration coming up this weekend.
H.E. Mrs. Vanessa Frazier from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Malta to the United Nations provided insight on the COVID-19 situation in Malta. While COVID-19 is being contained in Malta, there are still cases coming in from overseas. Economically, Malta is adapting with the worldwide challenges with tourism.
Ozan Yasavur from Ankara Bahçelievler Rotary Club spoke on the COVID-19 situation in Turkey. To address the rate of increase of COVID-19 in Turkey, the government has instituted restrictions for vulnerable groups and weekend activities.
Wilford Wilkinson, Past Rotary International President, spoke on Rotary International’s support for Rotary Clubs continuing to meet in a virtual setting to tackle COVID-19 challenges. Particularly, he highlighted the challenges of developing countries that are more affected by the virus.
Tommy Head, Vice President of the Rotary Club of New York, spoke about a children’s book called Adventure Ted from the Childhood Cancer Society. The book is promoting cleanliness behaviors through gamification among the youth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. George Onourah from Elmhurst Hospital in New York urged Rotarians to work on the COVID-19 situation as he is working near the epicenter of the pandemic.
The presentation ended with uplifting remarks from the Past President and President Elect of the Rotary Club of New York Helen Reisler and Gerard Aponte respectively. While Helen Reisler emphasized the need for collaboration towards a better collective future, Gerard Aponte spoke on the importance of tolerance and activism in the upcoming year.

About Mimmo MaindraMimmo Malandra is an internationally recognized Italian saxophonist who works closely with Italian and European composers in order to enhance the expressive potential of the saxophone. He is a researcher of innovative techniques and of new musical languages. He attended masterclasses held by Claude Delangle, Eugéne Rousseau, Arno Bornkamp, Francisco Martinez, Alain Crepin and Vincent David, as well as saxophonists of the prestigious “Quartetto di Sassofoni Accademia.” He took part in courses with saxophone professors of the Conservatorio Superiore of Oviedo in Spain and of the Mannheim Musikhochschule in Germany. He deepens his studies on the methodology and technology of musical technique and on the anthropological psycho-pedagogical disciplines of music.
He has given concerts in various formations: saxophone and piano, saxophone and organ, as a soloist, with chamber ensemble, in saxophone ensemble, and in collaboration with many symphony orchestras. He has given concerts as a soloist in Greece, Switzerland, France, Austria, Belgium, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Palestine (Bethlehem), Hungary, Cyprus, New York and Italy. He is involved in the research and the spread of Italian music for saxophone with a particularly attention on contemporary music and on music for the cinema and the theatre. He teaches saxophone in Italian public school and in various academies and holds master classes in Europe and lectures on Italian music for saxophone and the international contemporary music.
He participated in national and international television recordings (RAI uno, RAI world) and radio. He recorded a CD of world premiers in collaboration with some of the greatest contemporary Italian composers: Ennio Morricone, Nicola Piovani and Luis Bacalov Oscar Awards; Sergio Rendine, the famous harpist Cecilia Chailly, the cellist Giovanni Sollima and music writers chamber of Marco Tutino, Marco Betta, Giovanni D'Aquila and Opera Lorenzo Ferrero writer.
