On the Evening of 9/11
On September 11th, RCNY held a memorial event in honor of the 9/11 tragedy. It took place in the Union League Club's Historic Library with many Rotarians in attendance. Mary Eileen Shackleton gives us some RCNY History with 9/11 and shares her own thoughts.

Remembering 9/11 with the New York Rotary Club

You ask, "Why Rotary?” Come listen to Past District 7230 Governor Helen Reisler share her 9/11 story. (Every American over 30 has one. Like combat veterans, normally loquacious New Yorkers are often reluctant to recount hings no one should experience.) Helen’s story is all about the power of Rotary.

She was newly installed as the first woman president of the New York Rotary Club, wondering aloud to her husband what extraordinary thing she was going to do to convince the skeptics that she was up to the task. (Other than being the first person wearing lipstick while running club meetings.) Then came 9/11. Literally overnight, thousands of e-mail messages and dollars poured in from the worldwide Rotary family. How Helen organized volunteers and the committees assigned to distribute the funds (more than $1.4 million in all) according to the Four Way test is an incredible story. As Helen said tonight, it’s easy to raise money, giving it away fairly is much harder. Lest you think that Rotarians only wrote checks, members of the club were people of action. For example, a member forensic dentist identified remains, a member optometrist spent hours at Ground Zero providing needed eye care to first responders, and a member courier service owner helped deliver supplies. Helen singled out member Scarlett Pildes (in the audience) and PDG Matts Ingemanson (unable to attend) for their hard work. Thank you, Helen, for your Service Above Self and including me in tonight’s incredibly meaningful remembrance.
