Bio of our incoming President:
Malika Abrous has held a Teaching License and holds a Master of Arts degree (double major in History and Languages). She also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, English Literature and Civilization, as well as a Baccalaureate with Honors from the Académie d’Aix-en-Provence, France.
In addition, Ms. Abrous has held a pilot's license for four-seat Jodel aircraft.
Her professional career spans more than 30 years and includes extensive experience in education, international development and humanitarian assistance.
Key highlights of her career include:
Teaching History and Geography at the French Lycée in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during her husband's tenure as Director of the Information Department of the African Union.
Following her husband's appointment as Director in the United Nations Department of Political Affairs in New York, she devoted several years to raising her three children while also qualifying, through competitive examination, for inclusion on the roster of official contractual translators for the United Nations Department for Conference Services.
Joining the United Nations Secretariat as a staff member, serving first in the Department of Public Information and subsequently in the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs.
Serving with UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) from September 1984 through December 2011 in a variety of positions at Headquarters in New York and in field assignments, particularly in West Africa and Asia. During this period, she gained extensive experience in emergency operations, social sector programming, fundraising, interagency collaboration, coordination, and representation.
While serving in UNICEF's Programme Funding Office at NYHQ, Ms. Abrous managed UNICEF's relationship with Rotary International following the signing of the UNICEF–Rotary International Memorandum of Understanding in support of the global effort to eradicate Polio.
Following her retirement from UNICEF, Ms. Abrous joined the Rotary Club of New York, where she served as a Trustee of the Foundation and Chair of the Club's Monthly Breakfast Meetings.
